Role Reversal - Cubs bullpen blows up in 9th, O's get comeback W

The Baltimore Orioles rallied for 6 runs in the top of the 9th to build a 7-2 lead and then held on for the series tying 7-5 victory. The game wasn't over until Cap Anson's bid for his 2nd straight walk-off hit fell just short at the warning track. If the wind had been blowing out, he would've been the hero again, this time with a 3-R HR. But it was not to be.

No one had more than 2 hits, runs or RBIs in this balanced game.

Off to Baltimore for 2 more.

Cap Anson drives in winning runs in 9th

Cap Anson came up with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th with his Chicago Cubs trailing the Baltimore Orioles. Sparky Anderson had just replaced ineffective O's closer Gregg Olson with Pete Richert to face Anson.

Undaunted, Anson ripped a 1-2 curveball to LF plating the tying run and a Ken Williams throwing error allowed the winning run to score giving Chicago the 3-2 win.

Chicago held their 1st inning 1-0 lead (also on an unearned run from a George Sisler error) until the top of the 7th when a Cal Ripken, Jr. HR and a PH single gave Baltimore the 2-1 lead. Urban Shocker pitched 2 great relief innings for Baltimore before turning it over to the eventual loser Olson to start the 9th.

Solid game all around, but Baltimore's 3 errors were the difference in the end.

1st Round - #6 Chicago Cubs vs. #27 Baltimore Orioles

Cubs vs. O's. Two older franchises, one cursed and the other the owner of World Series rings, but recently the Cubs have done more winning than Baltimore. The Orioles have been stuck in a decade+ long Angelosian funk.

Rotations -

Cubs - Fergie Jenkins, 3 Fingers Brown, Charlie Root, Ed Reulbach

O's - Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar, Mike Mussina

Prediction - I foresee the tourney's first upset; the Cubs pitching and offense isn't 21 spots better than Baltimore's and a lower seed has to win eventually. Might as well be now. Orioles in 6.

They were saved by decent starting and superb relief pitching.

Sox close out Phillies

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 to win the opening round series 4-1.

Steve Carlton kept the Sox in check, allowing only 1 hit through 7. But in the 8th, he was relieved by Brett Myers. Wade Boggs greeted Myers with a bases clearing double putting Boston on top.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched another perfect inning for his tourney high 3rd series save.

Good, close games all tourney. In the end Boston was just a little better and the dice held up.

Sox plate 2 in 9th, edge Phils 6-5

Given a 5-4 lead, Mitch Williams & Tug McGraw could not hold down the Boston Red Sox in the bottom of the 9th.

Starters Steve Carlton & Cy Young were decent, each getting touched up for 4 runs in 6+ IP. Mel Parnell grabbed the cheap W out of Boston's pen, getting the last out in Philadelphia's 9th.

Boston leads the series 1-0.

Random game stat - Ted Williams struck out all three times he faced Carlton.

1st Round - #5 Boston Red Sox vs. #28 Philadelphia Phillies

An interesting matchup, the Phils strike me as a team that should be ranked higher. They will give Boston fits, more along the lines of a 2nd round matchup.

Rotations -

Boston - Cy Young, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Luis Tiant

Philadelphia - Steve Carlton, Pete Alexander, Robin Roberts, Chris Short

Prediction - Boston in 6. The Sox offense is incredible; that, combined with their slight edge in pitching will be the difference.

Cards Win! Cards Win!

Jesse Haines pitched 7 strong innings and St. Loius blanked Texas 4-0.

Albert Pujols started the scoring with a 2-R single in the 3rd that the immobile Dean Palmer couldn't get to; turned out to be all St. Louis needed.

Good series, credit due to Texas, better than I thought.

St. Louis does not have the complete pitching needed to win this thing, but their bats sure make it interesting.

Charlie Hough and 3 Relievers Put Texas on Brink of Series Victory

Hough teamed up with his pen to lead Texas over St. Louis 4-3. John Wetteland got his second rocky save (this time he surrendered a PH HR to Johnny Mize), but who's counting?

Big Frank Howard's 2-R HR in the 2nd inning was the game's big hit.

Game 6 features Dizzy Dean vs. Kenny Rogers.

Rangers tie series at 2-2 behind Blalock's 4-4 day

Hank Blalock took advantage of his first start of the series and went a perfect 4-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

John Wetteland pitched a shaky 9th to close out Texas' 7-5 victory.

(Forgot to post to blog after game, so no box score)

Same script, different ending. Cards hang on for 8-6 win.

It was 8-2 St. Louis going into the bottom of the 9th. John Tudor was called into mop up duty to get the last three outs. Three batters and a Ruben Sierra tater later, it was 8-6.

With Ranger fans salivating at the idea of a second consecutive big 9th inning rally, well rested Lindy McDaniel relieved Tudor and calmly got the last 3 outs preserving Jesse Haines' win.

All 8 St. Louis runs were driven in by different players. Depth baby.
