Role Reversal - Cubs bullpen blows up in 9th, O's get comeback W

The Baltimore Orioles rallied for 6 runs in the top of the 9th to build a 7-2 lead and then held on for the series tying 7-5 victory. The game wasn't over until Cap Anson's bid for his 2nd straight walk-off hit fell just short at the warning track. If the wind had been blowing out, he would've been the hero again, this time with a 3-R HR. But it was not to be.

No one had more than 2 hits, runs or RBIs in this balanced game.

Off to Baltimore for 2 more.

Cap Anson drives in winning runs in 9th

Cap Anson came up with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th with his Chicago Cubs trailing the Baltimore Orioles. Sparky Anderson had just replaced ineffective O's closer Gregg Olson with Pete Richert to face Anson.

Undaunted, Anson ripped a 1-2 curveball to LF plating the tying run and a Ken Williams throwing error allowed the winning run to score giving Chicago the 3-2 win.

Chicago held their 1st inning 1-0 lead (also on an unearned run from a George Sisler error) until the top of the 7th when a Cal Ripken, Jr. HR and a PH single gave Baltimore the 2-1 lead. Urban Shocker pitched 2 great relief innings for Baltimore before turning it over to the eventual loser Olson to start the 9th.

Solid game all around, but Baltimore's 3 errors were the difference in the end.

1st Round - #6 Chicago Cubs vs. #27 Baltimore Orioles

Cubs vs. O's. Two older franchises, one cursed and the other the owner of World Series rings, but recently the Cubs have done more winning than Baltimore. The Orioles have been stuck in a decade+ long Angelosian funk.

Rotations -

Cubs - Fergie Jenkins, 3 Fingers Brown, Charlie Root, Ed Reulbach

O's - Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar, Mike Mussina

Prediction - I foresee the tourney's first upset; the Cubs pitching and offense isn't 21 spots better than Baltimore's and a lower seed has to win eventually. Might as well be now. Orioles in 6.

They were saved by decent starting and superb relief pitching.

Sox close out Phillies

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 to win the opening round series 4-1.

Steve Carlton kept the Sox in check, allowing only 1 hit through 7. But in the 8th, he was relieved by Brett Myers. Wade Boggs greeted Myers with a bases clearing double putting Boston on top.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched another perfect inning for his tourney high 3rd series save.

Good, close games all tourney. In the end Boston was just a little better and the dice held up.
